My thoughts on Buddy’s Big Move – Shane Crawford

Post by Shane | October 1, 2013

Late this afternoon I sat down with my eldest boy Charlie Crawford and told him that Buddy was leaving the Hawks and heading to the Sydney Swans. His reaction as a 7 year-old boy slightly surprised me…he started to cry.

Did the news shock me? No it didn't. I spent some one-on-one time with Buddy in the Hawks locker rooms after the win on Saturday and he was highly emotional. After seeing him in this state it didn't take much to know there was something else playing on his mind.

Knowing Buddy as a team-mate and a friend I know this would have been the toughest decision of his life. In my opinion, this season would have been a long, drawn out one for Buddy as even he wouldn't have known how things were going to unfold until the final weeks of the season. One thing is for sure at his heart is at Hawthorn.

There is a lot more to this story than financial gain.

This decision allows him some freedom that he wouldn't have experienced since his early twenties. Perhaps this is even a reason why the deal with GWS didn't proceed at they were positioning him to be “the face of their club after all.

The start of the 2014 season is going to be hard to watch with the Big Bud dressed as a Swan but how lucky were we to have Buddy on our side for nine years and contributing to two Premierships for the Hawks?

So one last word to you Buddy!

I have a clear memory of our first training camp together at Kokoda when you were given your 24 hour ration pack and ate it in the first five minutes. We were told very clearly how important it was for you to learn to manage your rations and instructed not to give you any of our food supply. We failed dismally because we loved you then and we still love you to bits now…ALWAYS.

p.s. Whenever I am in Sydney it's your shout for coffee¦

Great summary of Buddy. I have been a Hawk for 57 years and will always have nice memories of Buddy, I wish him all the best, except when he plays our Hawks, lol. He sure brought a new dimension in excitement to us fans.

  7. Maria says:

I live in Sydney and the last few weeks every newspaper has had buddy in it, for all the wrong reasons. He is the face of the Sydney Swans now, so please don’t say that “This decision allows him some freedom”. Buddy will be in the Sydney fishbowl and he did this only for financial gain. The Buddy Factor just makes it more expensive to go the AFL in Sydney. I wish he had stayed in Melbourne.

  8. Teri says:

Crawf, thanks for writing your thoughts. I was so mad at Buddy for deciding to leave the Hawks, thinking it was just all about the cash, but you have made me change my mind.
I will miss looking out for buddy each and every time I watch a Hawks match. He has done so much for the club’s popularity, ladder success and membership numbers.
Don’t get me wrong, I‘ll still feel ill when I see him run out in red and white, but I will no longer be angry at him.
You”ll always be a Hawk at heart Buddy.

    Nicely said Crawf.
I have loved having Big Bud as part of our team and am sorry to see him leave, but I will always be glad that he was a Hawk. He drew people through the turnstile, put fire in our bellies, at times he took our breath away with his incredible skills. He drew an enormous amount of money into Hawthorn through merchandise sales – that will help secure our Clubs future long after he has retired from footy. He doesn’t owe us anything – he is entitled to do what he feels is best for him, as are we all. He has earned his place as a Hawks legend. I wish him well in his career, wherever that may be. Thanks for the memories Buddy #Always

Crawf you are remembered as a great hawks player in 9 years time Buddy will not he will loose the chance to be remembered as a legend of a club

The money sounds good now but in 30 year’s time he will not be named as a legend at any club.

In the end money can not buy you that standing at a club.
